چکیده

With the advancement of Web technology, hypermedia learning systems are becoming more widespread in educational settings. Hypermedia learning systems present course content with non-sequential formats, so students are required to develop learning paths by themselves. Yet, empirical evidence indicates that not all students can benefit from hypermedia learning. Research into individual differences suggests that prior knowledge has significant effects on student learning in hypermedia systems, with experts and novices showing different preferences to the use of hypermedia learning systems and requiring different levels of navigation support. It is therefore essential to develop a mechanism to help designers understand the needs of experts and novices. To address this issue, this paper presents a framework to illustrate the needs of students with different levels of prior knowledge by analyzing the findings of previous research. The overall aim of this framework is to integrate students’ prior knowledge into the design of hypermedia learning systems. Finally, implications for the design of hypermedia learning systems are discussed. * Corresponding author. Tel: +44-1895203397; fax: +44-1895-251686. Email address: [email protected]

Analysis of the learning results of experts and novices using the hypermedia software RACE

23 racing experts (coaches and athletes) and 31 novices (with sailing but no racing experiences) were examined. The sailing knowledge of the subjects was tested before they started to learn with the hypermedia program (pre-test), immediately after (acquisition) and four days after the learning session(retention). Each test was made up of two parts: – a multiple-choice test (33 questions; MC-tes...

Adjustable Learning Style Recognition based on 3Layers Fuzzy Cognitive Map

The learner’s Learning Style (LS) recognition has been proved a cornerstone to Adaptive Educational Hypermedia Systems’ (AEHS) design. Like some of the other well known cognitive (and affective) taxonomies, the Kolb taxonomy illustrates a range of interrelated learning abilities and styles beneficial to novices and experts. As AEHSs designed to emphasize reflection on learners’ experiences, pro...

Multimedia and Hypermedia Solutions for Promoting Metacognitive Engagement, Coherence, and Learning

Users of educational hypertext are faced with the challenge of creating meaning both within and between texts. Cohesion is an important factor contributing to whether a reader is able to capture meaning and comprehend text. When readers are required to fill in conceptual gaps in text, comprehension can fail if they do not have sufficient knowledge. Cohesion helps low-knowledge readers to create...

Usefulness of video-laryngoscopy with the Airway Scope for intubation performance and learning: an experimental manikin controlled study

BACKGROUND Different video-laryngoscopes (VDLs) for endotracheal intubation (ETI) have recently been developed. We compared the performance of the VDL Airway Scope (AWS) with the direct laryngoscopy by Macintosh (DLM) for ETI success, time and learning. METHODS We performed an experimental manikin controlled study. Twenty experienced (experts) and 40 inexperienced operators (novices) for DLM-...

Navigation Support in a Web-based Adaptive Educational Hypermedia System

While using the Web-based hypermedia courseware the students need navigational help to find their way through the learning material. Otherwise, they could get “lost in hyperspace”. In this paper we describe our approach developing Web-based adaptive educational hypermedia systems (AEHS) with the emphasis on adaptive navigation support. Our goal is to develop an AEHS, which would restrict the st...
